Introduced in 1997, the second-generation Audi A6 (chassis code C5) revolutionized executive car design. Styled under Peter Schreyer's leadership, the C5 featured a striking curved roofline, fastback rear silhouette, and a drag coefficient of Cd 0.28. Offered as a four-door sedan and Avant estate, the platform also spawned the iconic, air-suspended Audi allroad quattro in 1999.

Engine options for the C5 included 1.8T four-cylinder, 2.4 V6, 2.8 V6, 2.7 Biturbo V6, and 4.2 V8 petrol engines, as well as 1.9 TDI and 2.5 V6 TDI diesels. Drive options featured Multitronic CVT for front-wheel drive models, 5-speed Tiptronic automatics, and Torsen-based quattro all-wheel drive. The C5 generation successfully placed Audi on equal footing with rival executive luxury brands.
