Next-generation Hyundai Elantra Hybrid detailed
Hyundai has released global fuel economy figures for the upcoming eighth-generation Elantra Hybrid, known domestically in South Korea as the Avante. Following the sedan's initial unveiling in June, new technical details show that despite growing in overall dimensions and gaining output, the electrified compact sedan will deliver roughly a 10 percent boost in fuel efficiency over the car it replaces.
According to Korean reports, the new Elantra Hybrid pairs a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor to produce a total system output of 155 horsepower. That represents a 16-horsepower increase over the seventh-generation model. Despite carrying more weight and occupying a larger footprint, the sedan achieved an official domestic rating of 21.2 kilometers per liter (about 49.87 mpg combined) when equipped with 17-inch wheels. By comparison, the outgoing hybrid model equipped with equivalent 17-inch wheels was rated at 19.2 km/l (45.16 mpg combined). On smaller 16-inch rims, the new generation similarly edges past its predecessor's domestic benchmark with an equivalent of 49.63 mpg.
In the United States, official ratings are governed by the Environmental Protection Agency, where the outgoing 2026 Elantra Hybrid carries EPA estimates of 54 mpg combined on 16-inch wheels and 50 mpg combined on 17-inch wheels. While official North American specifications may see minor powertrain adjustments prior to debut, the baseline Korean data suggests the new model should easily match or exceed existing efficiency levels while offering a sharper redesign, more passenger room, and stronger acceleration.
