2About this generation
The first stage of the XC70 family, the all-wheel-drive V70 XC estate of 1997–2000.
The Volvo V70 XC appeared in 1997 as an all-wheel-drive derivative of the V70 estate and remained in production until 2000. Volvo traces the history of the later XC70 family to this early Cross Country model. It retained the five-door estate body and almost vertical rear hatch of the original V70. Protective lower-body styling, distinctive bumpers and increased ground clearance differentiated the XC from the regular estate. The vehicle belonged to the P80 family and combined a practical passenger compartment and load area with all-wheel drive. This initial stage is listed under its historical V70 XC name so that the catalogue does not suggest the XC70 badge was already used in every market. Its successor moved to the P2 platform in 2000. The early estate must also be distinguished from the much later SUV that revived the XC70 name.
