2028 Volvo XC60 and XC90 PHEVs Gain Up to 78 Miles of Electric Range

Long-range plug-in hybrids have been pretty elusive in the US. While already commonplace in parts of Europe and China, they have yet to make their way Stateside. Volvo is taking the lead, rolling out some of the first long-range PHEVs for the American market: the 2028 XC60 and XC90.

Volvo claims these extended-range plug-in models will help bridge the gap between traditional hybrids and full battery electric vehicles, which the company will continue to produce. Until another brand decides to compete, these two SUVs will act as the longest-range plug-in hybrids in the United States.

The XC60 T8 plug-in is powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a larger and more powerful battery. The powertrain makes 455 horsepower and 523 pound-feet of torque, sending the car from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds. Power is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. That setup yields 78 miles of pure electric range. While not reaching the triple-digit figures seen from Chinese OEMs in recent years, Volvo claims 78 miles is enough for drivers to rely on electric power for multiple days at a time.

The XC90 T8 receives the same powertrain as the XC60, though its 0-60 mph time is 5.0 seconds. The XC90 delivers a 73-mile pure electric range utilizing the same battery and more powerful electric motor. Both SUVs have a top speed governed at 112 mph. The T8 Polestar-trimmed XC60 has been dropped from the lineup alongside the broader changes around the Polestar brand, making the standard T8 the sportiest XC60 available.

Along with the new battery, the XC60 receives a second mid-cycle facelift. Exterior updates include a new front fascia with a redesigned bumper, grille, and hood, along with bulged fenders, a new rear bumper, and the next-generation version of Volvo's Thor's Hammer LED headlights. Inside, updates include Cardamom brown leather upholstery and Brown Ash wood inlays. Google Gemini comes standard as part of an updated infotainment system with an 11.2-inch central touchscreen.

Safety enhancements for the XC60 include a redesigned 360-degree camera enabled by new surround sensors, alongside an alert system for approaching cyclists when doors are opened. The updated XC60 T8 will launch in late 2027 for the 2028 model year, with the XC90 following soon after.
