Upcoming 2026 Volvo S90: Exclusively Asian Markets

The Volvo S90 continues to mature gracefully nearly ten years after its initial release. While the company now features the fully electric ES90, the flagship gasoline-powered sedan remains in the lineup. Even with an 18.4% decline in sales to 40,210 units in 2024, the figures are robust enough to justify a second update, indicating Volvo's commitment to the S90 for several more years.

Design Enhancements

The facelift closely follows the changes introduced to the XC90 last September. The new grille and matrix LED headlights from the SUV are now incorporated into the S90. Additional refinements include a redesigned bonnet, front bumper, and fenders. At the rear, the taillights have been reshaped and restyled. For the 2026 model year, Volvo is introducing two new color options, Aurora Silver and Mulberry Red, along with updated two-tone alloy wheel designs.

Inside, the S90 is equipped with the XC90's larger 11.2-inch infotainment screen. This new tablet-like display protrudes from the dashboard, which might not appeal to all users, myself included. On a positive note, the interior now boasts enhanced sound insulation and comes standard with adaptive suspension, ensuring a quieter and more comfortable driving experience.

Technical Specifications

While Volvo hasn't released complete technical details, it has mentioned that the plug-in hybrid variant can travel up to 50 miles (80 kilometers) on electric power alone, based on the WLTP cycle. Some regions will also receive a mild-hybrid gasoline version with front-wheel drive. The Swedish manufacturer discontinued diesel engine production just over a year ago.

There's no information yet on whether the facelifted V90 will receive similar updates, as no images are available in the gallery. Last year, Volvo sold 9,939 units of the V90, including the standard and the V90 Cross Country models, which is significantly fewer than the sedan. Certain areas, like the Netherlands, are already phasing out the estate version.

Market Availability

The refreshed S90 is set to debut in China this summer, with plans to expand to other regions subsequently. However, it is unlikely to reach the United States due to its Chinese manufacturing origin, a decision made in 2017 that now conflicts with the new tariffs imposed under the Trump administration.

Erik Severinson, Volvo's Chief Product and Strategy Officer, emphasized that the S90 will remain a pivotal part of their product lineup in specific Asian markets for the foreseeable future. Similarly, the XC90 will continue to be available in the upcoming years.

We have reached out to Volvo for confirmation regarding the availability of the 2026 S90 in the US and Europe.
