First Glimpse of Volvo's Upcoming EX60 Electric Crossover

During yesterday's event, the spotlight was on the unveiling of the ES90, a versatile vehicle blending sedan-like features with the practicality of an SUV through its functional tailgate and elevated suspension. Alongside this, Volvo offered a sneak peek of their forthcoming EX60 electric crossover. Around the 24:55 mark in the accompanying video, observant viewers could catch a fleeting appearance of the EX60 in the clay studio, serving as a hidden surprise for those who watched the entire presentation.

This strategic reveal by Volvo aims to generate excitement for their next-generation vehicle. The EX60 showcases design elements that align with Volvo’s recent models, including a vertical rear end and taillights that mirror the aesthetics of the EX30, ES90, and EX90. Additionally, the EM90 electric minivan in the Chinese market features LED lights adjacent to its rear glass panels.

Announced last September, the EX60 has been under development for some time. It will be Volvo’s inaugural production vehicle built on the new SPA3 platform, an advancement of the SPA2 architecture utilized by models like the ES90 and EX90. This new platform introduces significant enhancements, including increased computational capabilities and enhanced modularity.

Volvo’s engineering head, Anders Bell, highlighted that the SPA3 platform is specifically designed for electric vehicles, eliminating the limitations imposed by traditional combustion engines. He also emphasized that SPA3 is entirely developed in-house by Volvo, independent of their parent company, Geely. The platform is expected to enable the creation of a diverse range of vehicles, smaller than the EX30 and larger than the EX90, should Volvo choose to expand its lineup.

Last month, a generic teaser featuring the EX60 appeared alongside other upcoming models on the SPA3 platform. Following this, two additional models based on SPA3 are anticipated. Prototype testing for the EX60 is set to begin this year, with the production model slated for release in 2026. This launch places significant expectations on the EX60, especially considering the XC60’s success as Volvo's top-selling model in recent times.
