The Volkswagen Sharan I (Typ 7M) launched in May 1995. Co-developed through a joint venture with Ford (sharing platform designs with the Ford Galaxy and SEAT Alhambra), it was built in Palmela, Portugal. The vehicle offered a modular seven-passenger interior layout with removable seats. A major 2000 facelift (7M9) updated exterior headlights and adopted a Passat B5-style interior.

Engine options featured 1.8 Turbo, 2.0, and 2.8-liter VR6 petrol engines alongside 1.9/2.0 TDI turbodiesels with optional 4Motion AWD. Production ran for 15 years.
