Launched in 1997, the Volkswagen Golf IV (Typ 1J) represented a substantial leap forward in production quality, setting class benchmarks. It featured a fully galvanized bodyshell with laser welding and tight fit-and-finish tolerances. The interior impressed buyers with soft-touch plastics, iconic blue instrument backlighting, and upscale equipment. Available body styles included three and five-door hatchbacks, a Variant estate, and a restyled cabriolet.

The extensive powertrain lineup offered gasoline engines from 1.4 to 2.0 liters, a 1.8-liter turbo, a 2.3 VR5, and a flagship 3.2 VR6 in the Golf R32, which launched the world's first dual-clutch DSG transmission in a series-production car. High-efficiency 1.9 TDI diesels delivered up to 150 hp with Unit Injectors. The Haldex-based 4Motion system provided swift all-wheel drive response.
