The Volkswagen Golf III (Typ 1H) debuted in late 1991 and earned the European Car of the Year accolade for 1992. It featured a rounded aerodynamic profile with distinctive headlights, significantly improved structural rigidity, and modern safety features such as dual airbags and ABS. For the first time, the model lineup was expanded to include a spacious five-door Variant station wagon alongside a newly designed soft-top cabriolet.

Engine developments introduced the famous 1.9 TDI direct-injection turbodiesel and a compact 2.8-liter VR6 engine, making the Golf the first compact car equipped with a six-cylinder engine. The GTI performance line carried 2.0-liter 8-valve and 16-valve four-cylinders. Continuous safety upgrades throughout its lifecycle added side airbags and improved crumple zones until production ended in 1997.
