The second-generation Volkswagen Golf (Typ 19E/1G) made its public debut at the 1983 Frankfurt Motor Show. Retaining the recognizable silhouette of the original, it featured a substantially enlarged bodyshell engineered for superior aerodynamics (Cd 0.34) and enhanced crash protection. Cabin space grew notably, complemented by significantly refined interior materials and sound proofing. Production was focused on three-door and five-door hatchback body styles.

Powertrains included carbureted and fuel-injected gasoline engines ranging from 1.3 to 2.0 liters, alongside 1.6-liter naturally aspirated and turbocharged diesels. Technological highlights of the Mk2 included the Syncro visco-clutch all-wheel-drive system, the supercharged G60 performance model, and the rugged Golf Country crossover. A mid-cycle update in 1987 eliminated front door vent windows and introduced wider impact bumpers.
