Unveiled in late 2015, the seventh-generation Vauxhall Astra (Mark 7 / Astra K) was built on General Motors' lightweight D2XX platform, shedding up to 200 kg compared to the Astra J. This weight reduction drastically enhanced fuel efficiency, acceleration, and agile handling dynamics, helping the Astra K win the prestigious European Car of the Year award in 2016. It stood as the final Astra developed under GM ownership before Vauxhall joined Groupe PSA. The body range was streamlined to the five-door hatchback and five-door Sports Tourer estate. The Mk7 democratised premium technology in the C-segment by offering IntelliLux LED matrix headlights, AGR-certified ergonomic massage seats, and modern smartphone connectivity. The initial powertrain roster featured all-aluminium Ecotec engines: 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbos, 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbos, and a flagship 1.6-litre Turbo with 200 PS, alongside a 1.6-litre CDTi diesel available in single-turbo and twin-turbo BiTurbo configurations. In late 2019, a major facelift arrived, optimizing aerodynamics down to a drag coefficient of 0.26 and introducing a new GM-developed three-cylinder engine family: 1.2-litre petrols, a 1.4 Turbo paired with a CVT, and a 1.5-litre diesel mated to a 9-speed automatic gearbox. Production took place at Ellesmere Port and Gliwice, Poland.
