The second generation of Vauxhall Astra distinguished by aerodynamic styling, diverse body variants, and the legendary GTE 16V hot hatch.
Launched in October 1984, the second-generation Vauxhall Astra (Mark 2) made a major leap forward with class-leading aerodynamics, achieving a drag coefficient of just 0.32 (and 0.30 on performance trims). Based on an updated iteration of the GM T-Car platform, the range included three-door and five-door hatchbacks, five-door estates, the Astravan, a dedicated four-door saloon initially marketed as the Vauxhall Belmont, and a stylish convertible crafted by Bertone in Italy starting in 1987. The engine lineup spanned 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.6, 1.8, and 2.0-litre petrol units, alongside 1.6 and 1.7-litre naturally aspirated and turbocharged diesels sourced from GM and Isuzu. The undisputed icon was the Astra GTE, which from 1988 featured the famous 2.0-litre 16-valve 20XE engine developing 156 bhp, paired with a revolutionary digital LCD dashboard. Gearboxes were 4- and 5-speed manuals or a 3-speed automatic. A mid-cycle refresh in 1989 introduced subtle front grille tweaks, updated interior trims, and catalytic converter configurations. Produced in Ellesmere Port and Germany, the Astra Mk2 was a massive commercial hit in the UK market, praised for its aerodynamic efficiency, spacious boot capacity, and broad versatility.
