Vauxhall Astra IV (G) gallery (1998–2004)

Debuting in the spring of 1998, the fourth-generation Vauxhall Astra (Mark 4 / Astra G) represented a massive leap in build quality and dynamic refinement. Engineered on the GM Astra 3000 chassis, it boasted a fully zinc-galvanised body structure with twice the torsional rigidity of its predecessor, accompanied by a 12-year anti-perforation warranty. Lotus Engineering collaborated on the suspension tuning, giving the Astra exceptional road manners and balanced handling. The lineup featured three- and five-door hatchbacks, four-door saloons, estates, the Astravan, and dedicated Coupe and Convertible models designed and manufactured by Bertone. Power came from an extensive range of 16-valve Ecotec petrol engines ranging from 1.2 to 2.2 litres, topped by a 2.0-litre Turbo producing up to 200 PS in the sporting SRi Turbo and GSi variants. Modern direct-injection turbo-diesels included 1.7 DTi/CDTi, 2.0 DTi, and 2.2 DTi engines, while factory LPG Dualfuel derivatives were also made available. Transmissions were 5-speed manuals and 4-speed automatics. Minor cosmetic updates in 2002 refined trim grades and introduced Euro 4 compliant engines. Built primarily at Ellesmere Port, the Mk4 solidified Astra's status as a UK fleet and retail staple.
