Fifth and final generation Toyota Starlet (P90 series) featuring the Glanza V turbo model and GOA safety structure before succeeding to the Vitz.
The fifth and final generation Toyota Starlet hatchback (P90 series) launched in Japan in January 1999. Built on a heavily reinforced chassis incorporating Toyota's GOA (Global Outstanding Assessment) safety body structure, the P90 offered dramatically improved crash protection. Available in three- and five-door hatchback body styles, the range was divided into three distinct trim personalities: the practical Reflet, the retro-styled Carat, and the aggressive Glanza performance series. Standard safety equipment included dual front airbags and ABS brakes.
The flagship performance model was the Starlet Glanza V, powered by a 1.3-liter 4E-FTE turbocharged engine producing 135 horsepower, featuring a functional top-mounted intercooler hood scoop. Standard trims utilized a naturally aspirated 1.3-liter 4E-FE engine (85–88 hp). Transmissions were a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic, offered in FWD and 4WD configurations. A 1998 facelift updated headlight clusters and bumper styling. Production concluded in 1999 as the Starlet badge was succeeded by the new Vitz/Yaris.
