The fourth generation Toyota Starlet hatchback (P80 series) debuted in December 1989. The body embraced early 1990s organic bio-design aesthetics, presenting smooth rounded surfaces, an oval front grille motif, and enhanced aerodynamic efficiency. Produced as a three-door or five-door hatchback, the practical cabin offered durable fabric upholstery, an available driver airbag, power accessories, and automatic air conditioning.
The undisputed performance icon was the Starlet GT Turbo (EP82), powered by a 1.3-liter 16-valve 4E-FTE turbocharged engine delivering 135 horsepower, propelling the lightweight hatchback from 0 to 100 km/h in under 7 seconds. Standard engines included the 1.3-liter 4E-FE (100 hp) and a 1.5-liter 1N diesel. For the first time, full-time four-wheel-drive (4WD) variants joined the lineup. Transmissions included four- and five-speed manuals alongside three- and four-speed automatics. Facelifts in 1992 and 1994 introduced quad round projector headlights on GT Turbo models.
