The second generation Toyota Starlet (P60 series) launched in February 1978, representing the first model to carry the standalone 'Starlet' badge worldwide. Produced as a three-door or five-door hatchback and a three-door station wagon, the P60 holds historic significance as Toyota's last rear-wheel-drive subcompact hatchback. Its light curb weight (around 730 kg) and simple RWD layout made it a legendary platform for motorsports, rallying, and hill climbs. The body exhibited clean rectangular styling accents.

Powertrains featured reliable 4K-family four-cylinder engines: a 1.0-liter 2K (45 hp), a 1.2-liter 4K-J (65 hp), and a 1.3-liter fuel-injected 4K-E delivering 75 horsepower. Transmissions were four- or five-speed manuals and a three-speed automatic. Rack-and-pinion steering provided sharp turn-in response. Mid-cycle facelifts in 1980 and 1982 introduced slant-nose square headlights, integrated plastic bumpers, and updated interior instrumentation.
