The second generation Toyota Soarer luxury coupe (Z20 series) launched in January 1986. Evolving the aesthetic of its predecessor, the Z20 featured a streamlined aerodynamic silhouette with glass-encased headlamps and flush side window glazing. In 1989, Toyota produced a limited run of 500 Soarer Aerocabin models, featuring a motorized retractable aluminum hardtop over a two-seat cabin. The interior showcased an upgraded color Electro Multivision display, digital instrumentation, power seats, and plush suede upholstery.
Powertrain choices were strictly inline-six engines: 2.0-liter 1G-FE (135 hp), 1G-GE (160 hp), twin-turbocharged 1G-GTE (185–210 hp), and a flagship 3.0-liter single-turbo 7M-GTE generating up to 240 horsepower. Transmissions included five-speed manuals and four-speed ECT-S automatics. Suspension comprised double-wishbones at all four corners, complemented by TEMS electronically controlled air suspension and ABS disc brakes. A 1988 facelift refreshed front grille inserts and rear taillight lenses.
