The first generation Toyota Soarer luxury coupe (Z10 series) debuted in February 1981, winning the Japan Car of the Year award. Engineered on Toyota's rear-wheel-drive A60 platform (shared with the Celica Supra), the Soarer was styled as a high-end personal luxury GT coupe characterized by clean angular proportions, a long hood line, and a formal roofline. The interior was a technological masterpiece, debuting Japan's first digital liquid-crystal gauge display (Digital LOP), a trip computer, and the CRT-based Electro Multivision information screen.

Powertrain choices featured advanced inline-six engines: 2.0-liter 1G-EU (125 hp) and DOHC 1G-GEU (160 hp), along with flagship M-series engines including the 2.8-liter 5M-GEU (170 hp) and 3.0-liter 6M-GEU (190 hp). A 145-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter M-TEU joined the range in 1983. Transmissions included five-speed manuals and electronically controlled four-speed automatics. Mechanical features encompassed four-wheel independent suspension and electronical air suspension (ESC). A 1983 update revised grille and taillight detailing.
