Debuting at the North American International Auto Show in January 2009, the XW30 generation refined the aerodynamic liftback design, lowering the drag coefficient to Cd=0.25. The cabin incorporated plant-derived bioplastics for interior panelling, and introduced an optional solar roof panel designed to power ventilation fans while parked in direct sunlight. Engineers paid meticulous attention to structural body rigidity, minimizing noise, vibration, and harshness levels while enhancing cabin material quality. The refined chassis architecture delivered excellent ride comfort and predictable handling characteristics across both urban streets and high-speed highways.

Engine size increased to a 1.8-liter 2ZR-FXE Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder producing 99 hp, combined with a lighter electric motor for 136 total system horsepower. In 2012, Toyota launched the Prius PHV (Plug-in Hybrid) utilizing a lithium-ion battery supplying up to 25 km of EV-only range. A 2011 update refreshed LED lighting graphics and front bumpers.
