About this generation

The fourth generation Toyota Prius (XW50) launched in 2015 introduced the TNGA-C platform, E-Four electronic all-wheel drive, and 40% engine thermal efficiency.

Revealed in Las Vegas in September 2015, the XW50 Prius was the inaugural model built on Toyota's TNGA-C modular platform. The architecture lowered the vehicle's center of gravity by 2.5 cm, boosted chassis rigidity by 60%, and introduced double-wishbone rear suspension. The bold styling featured striking angular lighting signatures, while electric all-wheel drive (E-Four/AWD-e) debuted as an option. Engineers paid meticulous attention to structural body rigidity, minimizing noise, vibration, and harshness levels while enhancing cabin material quality. The refined chassis architecture delivered excellent ride comfort and predictable handling characteristics across both urban streets and high-speed highways.

The hybrid powertrain matched a 1.8-liter 2ZR-FXE engine boasting a world-class 40% thermal efficiency with reduced-loss electric motors, generating 122 system horsepower. The Prius Prime (PHV) variant offered a restyled front fascia and dual-wave rear glass, providing up to 50 km of EV driving range. A 2018 facelift smoothed out front and rear lighting shapes. Production ended in 2022. High levels of active and passive safety were corroborated by outstanding crash test results and comprehensive driver assistance technologies. Thanks to exceptional mechanical endurance and robust powertrain engineering, this generation earned global acclaim across all major automotive markets.
