Launched in Japan in December 1997 (NHW10 body code) and globally exported from 2000 (NHW11), the original Prius (XW10) made automotive history. Styled as a compact four-door sedan with a tall roofline and an aerodynamic drag coefficient of Cd=0.30, the vehicle was purpose-engineered to demonstrate the commercial viability of dual-power petrol-electric propulsion systems. The inaugural Toyota Hybrid System (THS) combined an Atkinson-cycle 1.5-liter 1NZ-FXE petrol engine (58–72 hp) with an electric motor (40–44 hp) and a high-voltage nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery pack. Power delivery was managed via a planetary gear power split device acting as an electronic continuously variable transmission (e-CVT). Average fuel consumption achieved a groundbreaking 4.5–5.0 L/100 km. XW10 production concluded in 2003.
