About this generation

First generation Toyota Mark X mid-size sports sedan (GRX120 series), replacing the iconic Mark II lineage with powerful V6 engine choices.

The first generation Toyota Mark X (GRX120 series) debuted in November 2004 as the direct successor to the long-running Mark II. Built on Toyota's rear-wheel-drive N platform (shared with the Crown S180 and Lexus GS), the sedan featured a lowered center of gravity and a balanced 54:46 front-to-rear weight distribution. Exterior styling presented an aggressive, low-slung stance highlighted by distinctive triple-beam headlight clusters, an integrated rear bumper dual exhaust layout, and a sleek roofline. The driver-focused cabin incorporated ambient LED ceiling illumination, Optitron instrument gauges, and aluminum or wood trim accents.

Transitioning away from inline-six engines, the Mark X adopted V6 engines featuring D-4 direct fuel injection: a 2.5-liter 4GR-FSE (215 hp) and a 3.0-liter 3GR-FSE (256 hp). Rear-wheel-drive variants utilized a six-speed sequential automatic transmission, while all-wheel-drive (Four) models were equipped with a five-speed automatic. A mid-cycle refresh in 2006 updated the front grille mesh, front bumper lip, side mirror indicators, and rear light reflector designs, alongside available Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS).
