The second generation Toyota Caldina (T210 series) debuted in September 1997, wearing a athletic wagon body highlighted by slim front headlamps and high-mounted vertical taillight clusters. Produced exclusively as a five-door passenger station wagon (the commercial van continued on the T190 floorpan), the refined interior offered versatile split-folding rear seats, automatic climate control, a dual panoramic sunroof, and supportive sports buckets on upper trims.

The benchmark model was the legendary Caldina GT-T sports wagon, powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter 3S-GTE engine delivering 260 horsepower mated to Toyota's rally-bred full-time four-wheel-drive system with a rear Torsen limited-slip differential. Naturally aspirated choices included the 1.8-liter 7A-FE, 2.0-liter 3S-FE, 2.0-liter 3S-GE (190 hp), and a 2.2-liter 3C-TE turbodiesel. Transmissions were a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic. A mid-cycle update in 2000 refreshed the front bumper design, clear-lens lighting, and interior console accents.
