The first generation Toyota Alphard flagship luxury minivan (AH10 series) launched in Japan in May 2002 to compete in the full-size premium MPV segment. Constructed on Toyota's front-wheel-drive MC platform, the Alphard wore a commanding exterior body styled with a prominent chrome radiator grille, power-operated dual sliding doors, and stacked headlamp lenses. The luxurious seven- or eight-passenger cabin offered premium plush velour or leather seating, dual-zone automatic climate control, rotating captain's chairs, and a Toyota Theater Sound System with ceiling-mounted rear screens.

Powertrain options featured a 2.4-liter 2AZ-FE four-cylinder (159 hp) and a 3.0-liter 1MZ-FE V6 generating 220 horsepower. In 2003, Toyota introduced the Alphard Hybrid equipped with THS-C technology (2.4-liter 2AZ-FXE engine coupled with an eCVT and E-Four electric all-wheel drive). Gasoline models utilized four- or five-speed automatic gearboxes. Offered in Alphard G and Alphard V sales channels, a 2005 mid-cycle update refreshed the front grille mesh, taillight lenses, and added AFS adaptive front lighting.
