Suzuki Jimny II (SJ) gallery (1981–1998)
The second generation of the Suzuki Jimny (SJ series) was produced from 1981 to 1998.
Launching in May 1981, the second-generation Suzuki Jimny (SJ30/SJ410/SJ413 and domestic JA chassis series) updated the off-roader with a boxy exterior design, enhanced cabin ergonomics, and a wider track. Standard mechanical features included a heavy-duty ladder frame, solid axles front and rear, and a manually engaged part-time 4WD system with a transfer box. Body choices expanded to short and long wheelbases, soft-tops, raised-roof hardtops, and chassis cabs, heavily popularized globally as the Suzuki Samurai.
Domestic Japanese versions used 550 cc or 660 cc turbocharged engines (JA11/JA22), while international models featured 1.0-liter 4-cylinder engines (SJ410) and 1.3-liter OHC four-cylinders (SJ413/Samurai producing up to 70 hp). A major mechanical evolution in late 1995 (JA12/JA22 and updated Samurai) replaced the leaf springs with coil springs on all four wheels, dramatically improving ride quality, suspension articulation, and highway stability.
