Unveiled in late 1983, the first-generation Suzuki Cultus (chassis AA) was a joint development project between Suzuki and General Motors. Exported globally under names including Suzuki Swift, Chevrolet Sprint, and Pontiac Firefly, the lightweight hatchback tipped the scales at roughly 650 kg and set benchmark fuel efficiency figures.

Power came from 1.0-liter three-cylinder G10 engines (offered in naturally aspirated and turbocharged variants) and 1.3-liter G13A four-cylinders. In 1986, Suzuki released the hot Cultus GTi featuring a 1.3-liter DOHC 16-valve engine delivering 97 hp, four-wheel disc brakes, and upgraded suspension.
