The first generation Subaru Stella tall-boy mini-hatchback was produced from 2006 to 2011, offering a supercharged engine and an EV variant.
Produced from June 2006 to May 2011, the first-generation Subaru Stella (RN1/RN2 platform) adapted the R2 floorpan into a practical tall-boy 5-door hatchback layout. Powered by Subaru's 658 cc EN07 4-cylinder engine in naturally aspirated (54 hp) and supercharged (64 hp in Custom trims) forms, it utilized the i-CVT transmission. The engineering setup effectively combined the low center of gravity inherent to the horizontally-opposed engine layout with a rigid chassis frame, delivering precise handling and composure across dry pavement and slippery surfaces alike. Engine bay packaging ensured optimal front-to-rear axle weight distribution alongside efficient thermal cooling under sustained driving loads.
A 2008 facelift restyled front headlamps and grille accents. In 2009, Subaru launched the limited-production Plug-in Stella EV featuring a 64 hp electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack. In-house Stella production ended in 2011. Designers placed a strong emphasis on cabin ergonomics, occupant visibility, and long-distance driving comfort. Robust mechanical reliability across the drivetrain and suspension components helped establish this generation as a benchmark choice within its competitive market segment worldwide.
