Unveiled at the 2019 New York International Auto Show, the fifth-generation Forester (SK code) adapted the modular Subaru Global Platform (SGP), enhancing crash energy absorption by 40% while reducing cabin noise. The turbocharged XT was dropped, leaving a direct-injected 2.5-liter FB25D flat-four (185 hp) and the e-Boxer hybrid system pairing a 2.0-liter FB20 engine with a 13.5 kW electric motor. The engineering setup effectively combined the low center of gravity inherent to the horizontally-opposed engine layout with a rigid chassis frame, delivering precise handling and composure across dry pavement and slippery surfaces alike. Engine bay packaging ensured optimal front-to-rear axle weight distribution alongside efficient thermal cooling under sustained driving loads.

A 2021 facelift introduced redesigned headlights, a bolder grille fascia, and upgraded EyeSight stereo cameras. Simultaneously, Subaru launched the off-road Wilderness trim featuring 234 mm ground clearance, re-tuned suspension, and underbody skid plates. Fifth-generation production ended in 2024. Designers placed a strong emphasis on cabin ergonomics, occupant visibility, and long-distance driving comfort.
