The first generation Subaru Forester launched in 1997, combining a raised crossover seating position with car-like handling precision.
Debuting in Japan in February 1997, the first-generation Subaru Forester (SF code) adapted a reinforced Impreza platform underneath an upright, boxy crossover wagon body layout. Featuring a generous 190–200 mm ground clearance and excellent outward visibility, it pioneered the compact crossover segment. Engine offerings centered around EJ-series flat-four petrol units, including 2.0L and 2.5L naturally aspirated engines as well as high-output 2.0-liter turbo models delivering up to 250 hp for the domestic Japanese market. The engineering setup effectively combined the low center of gravity inherent to the horizontally-opposed engine layout with a rigid chassis frame, delivering precise handling and composure across dry pavement and slippery surfaces alike. Engine bay packaging ensured optimal front-to-rear axle weight distribution alongside efficient thermal cooling under sustained driving loads.
A mid-cycle update in 2000 refreshed the front grille, headlights, and rear tailgate styling. Drivetrain options included a 5-speed manual with dual-range transfer case on naturally aspirated models or a 4-speed automatic paired with Symmetrical AWD. First-generation production ran through early 2002. Designers placed a strong emphasis on cabin ergonomics, occupant visibility, and long-distance driving comfort. Robust mechanical reliability across the drivetrain and suspension components helped establish this generation as a benchmark choice within its competitive market segment worldwide.
