Pontiac Lemans V gallery (1978–1981)
The fifth generation of the mid-size Pontiac LeMans was produced on the GM A-body platform in sedan, coupe, and wagon body styles.
The fifth-generation rear-wheel-drive Pontiac LeMans was produced from 1978 to 1981 as part of GM's corporate downsizing program. The car was built on the lighter GM A-body platform, significantly reducing weight compared to previous generations. The body style lineup included a two-door coupe, a four-door sedan, and a practical Safari station wagon. The engine range featured economical 3.8-liter V6 engines, as well as more powerful V8 engines with displacements of 4.3, 4.9, and 5.0 liters. Transmissions offered included 3-speed or 4-speed manual gearboxes and traditional 3-speed automatic transmissions. The main difference from the fourth generation was the shift to more compact exterior dimensions while maintaining a spacious interior. During its production run, the model underwent minor annual styling updates affecting the grille and lighting. The primary sales market remained the United States and Canada, where the car enjoyed steady demand from buyers seeking classic American comfort in a more efficient format.
