The second generation moved to the intermediate A-body frame platform and gave birth to the legendary GTO.

The second generation moved to the classic intermediate A-body frame platform with a traditional layout. The engine lineup was replenished with powerful V8 motors working with manual and automatic transmissions. It was on the basis of this generation that the legendary Pontiac GTO muscle car appeared, becoming iconic in the history of the American automotive industry. The body underwent changes toward more aggressive and sleek lines with an expressive grille. In 1966, the model underwent a noticeable restyling with a modified C-pillar shape and rear panel design. The main sales market was North America.
