Pontiac Lemans III gallery (1968–1972)
The third-generation Pontiac LeMans, built from 1968 to 1972 on the classic GM A-body platform, featured aggressive coke-bottle styling and a wide range of powerful V8 engines.
The third-generation Pontiac LeMans was manufactured from 1968 to 1972 on General Motors' intermediate A-body platform utilizing a conventional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. Body styles included two-door hardtops and coupes, four-door sedans, and station wagons. Powertrain options ranged from inline-six engines to massive 5.7-liter, 6.6-liter, and 7.5-liter V8 blocks, paired with manual or three-speed automatic transmissions. The most significant changes compared to the previous generation included a sweeping coke-bottle aesthetic, hidden headlights on select trim lines, shorter wheelbases for coupes, and refined interior layouts. Throughout its lifecycle, the model received annual cosmetic refreshes to its grilles and taillights, alongside mechanical detuning in the early 1970s to comply with new federal emissions regulations and lower compression requirements. The primary target market was North America, where the LeMans family achieved massive success by offering sporty styling and robust performance options to everyday buyers.
