The first-generation Pontiac LeMans, produced from 1962 to 1963 on the GM Y-body platform, originally started as a luxury trim and appearance package for the Tempest line.
The first-generation Pontiac LeMans was produced from 1962 to 1963 on the compact GM Y-body platform, initially serving as a sporty upscale package for the Tempest model. It was offered in two-door coupe and convertible body styles featuring an innovative and unusual front-engine, rear-transaxle layout connected by a flexible driveshaft. Engine options included slant-four engines, a 3.5-liter aluminum V8, and later a 5.3-liter V8 introduced for the 1963 model year. Transmission choices ranged from manual two-, three-, and four-speed gearboxes to a two-speed automatic. Key differences from the base Tempest included standard bucket seats, premium vinyl interior trim, and unique rear-end styling. In 1963, the car received a flatter, more conventional exterior refresh and was spun off into its own distinct series as sales grew. The primary target market was North America, where this compact line successfully laid the groundwork for the upcoming muscle car craze.
