The first generation of the Pontiac Grand Am sport car debuted in 1973 on the GM A-body platform.

The first generation of the Pontiac Grand Am sport car debuted in 1973 and was produced through 1975 on the rear-wheel drive GM A-body platform incorporating European styling influences. The model was offered in two-door coupe and four-door sedan body styles, equipped with powerful 6.6-liter and 7.5-liter V8 gasoline engines combined with manual or automatic transmissions. The vehicle was created as a response to European grand tourers, but the 1973 oil crisis sharply reduced buyer interest in large and fuel-thirsty cars. As a result, the first-generation model faced declining sales and was temporarily discontinued. The primary market was the United States of America.
