Nissan Terrano II (R20) photos

Manufactured in Barcelona, Spain, from 1993 to 2006, the Nissan Terrano II (chassis code R20) was developed specifically for European tastes through a joint venture with Ford, which marketed a badge-engineered twin as the Ford Maverick. Unlike the unibody R50 generation that succeeded the original WD21 in North America and Japan, the R20 retained a traditional ladder-frame chassis with double-wishbone torsion-bar front suspension and a coil-sprung solid rear axle, sharing foundational mechanicals with the WD21 architecture. Styled by the Italian design house IDEA, it was offered in both short-wheelbase three-door and long-wheelbase five-door wagon bodies with a tall greenhouse and available seven-seat capacity. Powertrain choices centered on a 2.4-liter KA24 four-cylinder gasoline engine and the rugged 2.7-liter TD27T and intercooled TD27Ti four-cylinder turbodiesels, later joined by a 3.0-liter ZD30 direct-injection turbodiesel borrowed from the Patrol. These engines paired with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission and a part-time four-wheel-drive system with low range. The R20 underwent three significant facelifts in 1996, 1999, and 2002, transitioning from rectangular headlights to quad round lamps and finally integrated modern headlamp clusters alongside modernized interiors. Primarily sold across Europe, it was also exported to Japan as the Nissan Mistral.
