Introduced in 2012, the second-generation Nissan Note (codenamed E12) shifted from its predecessor's tall mini-MPV proportions toward a sleeker, more aerodynamic five-door hatchback design created for global markets. Built on the lighter and more rigid Nissan V-platform rather than the older B-platform, the E12 maintained the signature cabin spaciousness, generous rear legroom, and wide-opening rear doors that defined the original model. Powertrain options varied significantly by region: core markets received three-cylinder 1.2-liter gasoline engines, including the naturally aspirated HR12DE and the supercharged direct-injection HR12DDR (DIG-S), while European buyers were also offered the frugal 1.5-liter dCi turbodiesel and North American versions, marketed as the Versa Note, utilized a 1.6-liter four-cylinder HR16DE engine. Transmissions consisted of a five-speed manual and an updated Xtronic continuously variable transmission (CVT). A major facelift arrived in 2016, introducing sharper V-Motion front styling alongside the groundbreaking e-Power series-hybrid drivetrain, which used a 1.2-liter gasoline engine solely as a generator to supply electricity to a front traction motor shared with the Nissan Leaf. Enthusiast-oriented Note Nismo variants with chassis reinforcements, aerodynamic body kits, and tuned powertrains were also offered. While European production ended earlier due to segment shifts, the E12 remained a top seller in Japan and other Asian markets until 2020.
