Launched in 1991 and manufactured through 1995, the ninth-generation Nissan Gloria (chassis code Y32) arrived during the peak era of Japanese automotive engineering as the badge-engineered twin to the Nissan Cedric. A major shift compared to the previous Y31 generation was that the new Y32 platform was dedicated solely to the four-door pillarless hardtop body style for private and executive buyers, whereas the traditional pillared sedan remained in production on the older Y31 architecture for fleet and commercial service. Visually, the Y32 replaced the crisp, boxy lines of the 1980s with smoother, fuller body panels and a more planted stance. Buyers could choose between two distinct personalities: the opulent Brougham specification featuring formal rectangular headlights and plush cabin appointments, or the athletic Gran Turismo variant, instantly recognizable by its quad round headlamps and firmer suspension tuning. Riding on a classic front-engine, rear-wheel-drive platform with four-wheel independent suspension, the Y32 offered advanced chassis electronics and high levels of acoustic insulation. Powertrain options centered around Nissan's proven VG-series V6 gasoline engines in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged configurations, alongside an RD-series inline-six diesel engine, all paired with smooth-shifting four-speed or five-speed automatic transmissions. A facelift in 1993 brought subtle updates to the front fascia, taillight clusters, and cabin equipment. The Gloria Y32 was sold primarily in the Japanese domestic market.
