The Lancer Evolution VIII (CT9A platform designation) debuted in January 2003, representing the first Evolution officially exported to North America. It introduced a carbon-fiber rear wing. Engineering of the Lancer Evolution VIII (CT9A) (factory code CT9A) emphasized high structural rigidity, aerodynamic efficiency, and optimized interior spatial packaging. Built with reinforced body structures utilizing high-tensile steel alloys, the platform delivered reduced curb weight alongside improved occupant crash protection. The vehicle was distributed globally in multiple configuration packages designed to satisfy diverse market demands and regional regulatory specifications.

Powered by the 4G63T engine with up to 400 hp on UK-spec FQ models. Drivetrain upgrades introduced a 6-speed manual gearbox and the Super AYC rear differential. Production ended in 2005. The powertrain lineup incorporated efficient engine families paired with robust manual, automatic, or continuously variable transmissions depending on trim selection.
