The six-cylinder Mercedes-Benz W180 (220 a, 220 S) and W128 (220 SE) series, produced from 1954 through 1959, were colloquially known as the 'Large Ponton' (Grosser Ponton). Derived from the unibody pontoon chassis, the flagship models featured a 70 mm longer wheelbase and an extended front engine bay to accommodate smooth inline-six engines. The model lineup included a four-door sedan alongside handcrafted two-door coupes and convertibles equipped with polished wood dashboards, ivory control switches, and soft leather seating.

The 220 S introduced dual-carburetor M180 engines delivering up to 106 hp, while the 1958 220 SE (W128) pioneered Bosch mechanical manifold fuel injection, elevating power output to 115 hp. Power was handled by a four-speed manual transmission with an optional 'Hydrak' automatic hydraulic clutch system. A single-joint low-pivot rear swing axle enhanced high-speed stability and ride comfort over uneven road surfaces. The range firmly established Mercedes-Benz as a premier global luxury car manufacturer.
