About this generation

Seventh generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W140), produced from 1991 to 1998, renowned for its engineering perfection and flagship V12 engine.

The seventh-generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W140) premiered at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1991. Representing an uncompromising summit of engineering excellence, the W140 introduced double-pane acoustic side glass, pneumatic soft-close doors and trunk lid, retractable rear parking guide rods, and orthopedic contour seats. Available in short-wheelbase (W140), long-wheelbase (V140), and coupe configurations (C140, later badged as CL-Class), the W140 provided unmatched cabin isolation and road presence.

Most famously, the W140 introduced Mercedes-Benz's first production passenger V12 engine, the 6.0-liter 48-valve M120 outputting 394 hp in the 600 SEL / S 600. The broader lineup offered inline-sixes (S 280, S 320), DOHC V8s (S 420, S 500), and OM603/OM606 turbodiesels. Technological innovations debuted on the W140 included Electronic Stability Program (ESP) in 1995, Brake Assist (BAS), Parktronic ultrasonic sensors, and voice-activated control systems. Over 406,000 units were produced before production concluded in 1998.
