Introduced in 1990, the W463 chassis marked the evolution of the G-Class from an all-terrain workhorse into a highly prestigious luxury SUV. Technical highlights included permanent all-wheel drive, three electro-hydraulically lockable differentials operated via center-console buttons, ABS brakes, and a comprehensively redesigned interior trimmed in fine leather and real wood veneers. The body-on-frame construction and signature boxy silhouette were preserved across three-door, five-door, and soft-top cabriolet body styles.

Over its 28-year production run, the W463 received extensive powertrain updates ranging from V6 turbodiesels (G 320 CDI, G 350 d) to naturally aspirated and supercharged V8s, culminating in the twin-turbo V12 G 65 AMG. Major facelifts in 2007, 2008, and 2012 integrated modern COMAND infotainment, LED daytime running lights, and driver assistance systems. Ultra-exclusive derivatives like the 6x6 G 63 AMG and the Mercedes-Maybach G 650 Landaulet cemented the W463's status as a global automotive icon.
