2027 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Output Climbs to 577 HP With New Plug-in Hybrid System

The updated 2027 Mercedes-AMG GLE53 marks a major technical departure by switching from a mild-hybrid setup to a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain. Slotting right above the GLE580, the GLE53 carries a base price of $98,450 for the traditional SUV body style and $99,450 for the fastback Coupe version. Fully optioned test examples reached $113,810 for the SUV and $117,160 for the Coupe. While choosing the GLE53 means giving up the GLE580's V-8 engine, the six-cylinder plug-in hybrid system delivers impressive refinement and athletic capability.

Under the hood sits an upgraded 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine producing 443 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. It is paired with an electric motor generating 181 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque. Combined system output reaches 577 hp and 553 lb-ft, representing a significant increase of 148 hp and 140 lb-ft over the outgoing mild-hybrid model's 429 hp and 413 lb-ft. Mercedes estimates a 0–60 mph acceleration time of 4.1 seconds, down from 4.9 seconds previously. Crucially, the instant torque from the electric motor masks the slow-shifting tendencies of the nine-speed automatic transmission.

The PHEV setup provides up to an EPA-estimated 45 miles of all-electric driving. When charging is needed, the GLE53 supports 60-kW DC fast charging capable of bringing the battery from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 20 minutes, while an at-home Level 2 charger completes a full charge in around three hours. Even when running with an empty traction battery, the system functions as a conventional hybrid to improve fuel economy.

Chassis dynamics benefit from a standard Airmatic air suspension uniquely tuned for AMG performance. It delivers a noticeably firmer, more controlled ride than standard GLE models. Comfort mode provides composed road manners without compromising passenger comfort, while Sport and Sport+ modes tighten body control for aggressive driving on winding roads. The package is rounded out by distinctive AMG styling elements, 21-inch wheels, AMG-specific Nappa leather upholstery, steering-wheel control dials, and performance calibrations for the all-wheel-drive system.
