The first-generation Honda Accord premiered in May 1976 as a three-door hatchback, followed by a four-door sedan variant in 1977. Built on an enlarged platform derived from the Civic, the model was engineered to strengthen Honda's position in global passenger car markets. It boasted generous standard features for its era, including a tachometer, intermittent wipers, and a cassette audio player, setting high equipment standards in the compact segment.

Power came from 1.6-liter EF and 1.8-liter EK inline-four engines featuring Honda's CVCC lean-burn technology, delivering 68 to 85 horsepower without requiring a catalytic converter. Transmission options comprised a five-speed manual and a two- or three-speed Hondamatic semi-automatic or automatic. A mid-cycle refresh in 1978 updated the front grille and revised interior trim elements.
