Holden Barina I (MB) gallery (1985–1988)

The first-generation Holden Barina, designated under the MB and ML series codes, was manufactured from 1985 to 1988 as a badge-engineered derivative of the first-generation Suzuki Cultus under the General Motors and Suzuki partnership. Sold across Australia and New Zealand, the light subcompact was offered in practical three-door and five-door hatchback body styles. Power came from a durable 1.3-liter G13A inline-four petrol engine developing around 73 horsepower, mated to either a five-speed manual transmission or a three-speed automatic. In 1986, the initial MB series was updated to the ML specification, which brought a revised front grille, upgraded interior switchgear, and a newly developed coil-spring rear suspension setup replacing the older leaf springs. The original Barina quickly established itself as a benchmark for fuel economy, low running costs, and accessible urban mobility in Australasia.
