GMC TopKick I gallery (1980–1989)
First generation of the medium-duty commercial truck line built on the C/K platform.
The first generation of the GMC TopKick medium-duty truck was introduced in 1980 as part of the Class 6 and 7 C/K Medium Duty commercial lineup. Utilizing the cab structure from the third-generation C/K truck series, the TopKick featured a distinct forward-tilting fiberglass hood and an enlarged grille to accommodate heavy-duty cooling packages. It served as a versatile chassis cab used for dump trucks, delivery vans, vocational utility bodies, and school bus applications. Powertrain options included Chevrolet gasoline Big Block V8 engines such as the 366 and 427 cubic inch units, as well as Caterpillar 3208 and Detroit Diesel powerplants. Transmission choices spanned various manual gearboxes from Clark, Fuller, and Spicer alongside Allison automatic units. The truck was available in single-axle 4x2 and tandem-axle 6x4 configurations. It remained in production with minor functional updates through 1989 across North American commercial markets.
