GMC Jimmy III (S-15) gallery (1982–1994)
The first generation of the compact S-15 Jimmy on the GMT330 platform was offered in both 2-door and 4-door configurations.
Introduced for the 1983 model year (production starting in 1982), the GMC S-15 Jimmy (later renamed simply Jimmy) was developed as a compact sport utility vehicle on the GM GMT330 platform alongside the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer. It utilized a body-on-frame architecture with an independent front suspension and a solid rear axle with leaf springs. While originally sold exclusively as a 2-door model, a longer-wheelbase 4-door version was added for the 1991 model year, significantly expanding its market appeal to families. Early powertrain choices included 1.9L and 2.0L four-cylinders, a 2.2L Isuzu diesel, a 2.5L Tech IV inline-four, and a 2.8L V6. The standout powertrain arrived in 1988 with the 4.3L Vortec V6 engine, eventually producing up to 200 horsepower with Central Port Injection (CPI). Gearbox options included 4- and 5-speed manuals and the 4-speed GM 700R4/4L60-E automatic transmission. The Insta-Trac shift-on-the-fly four-wheel drive system was a major technological highlight. The model was refreshed in 1991 with a revised front fascia and upgraded interior before being redesigned.
