The first-generation Ford Capri was produced from 1968 to 1974 across manufacturing plants in Britain and Germany. Designed as the European equivalent of the highly successful Ford Mustang, the Capri featured a classic sports coupe silhouette with a long hood and a short rear deck. It gained immediate market popularity due to its affordable pricing and extensive customization options, ranging from economy commuters to high-performance muscle variants.

Powertrain choices were vast, featuring inline-four Kent and Pinto engines (1.3L–2.0L), V4 units (1.3L–2.0L), and V6 Essex and Cologne engines ranging from 2.0L to 3.0L. Legendary performance editions included the fuel-injected RS2600 and RS3100, which achieved significant motorsport success in touring car championships. A major mid-cycle facelift in 1972 introduced larger taillights, revised suspensions, and improved interior ergonomics.
