The fifth generation of the Ford Bronco was produced from 1992 to 1996, featuring streamlined styling, enhanced frontal crash crumple zones, and modern safety features.
Built on the ninth-generation Ford F-150 platform, the fifth-generation Ford Bronco debuted for the 1992 model year. It received a major front-end redesign with a larger grille, wraparound composite headlights, and reshaped bumpers for optimized aerodynamics. Safety engineering was a primary focus, incorporating front frame crumple zones, a center high-mount rear stop lamp, and a standard driver-side airbag introduced in 1994. Although the fiberglass rear roof remained removable, Ford removed removal instructions from the owner's manual due to federal safety regulations regarding rear seatbelt anchors.
Powertrain options included a 4.9-liter inline-six, a 4.9-liter V8 (205 hp), and a 5.8-liter Windsor V8 (210 hp) with multi-port electronic fuel injection. Transmission choices comprised a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed E4OD automatic, paired with an optional Touch Drive electronic push-button transfer case. For 1996, engines gained OBD-II compliance. Special trim packages included the Eddie Bauer edition and the XLT Sport. Production of the fifth-generation Bronco concluded in June 1996, after which Ford replaced the model line with the four-door Expedition.
