The fourth generation of the Ford Bronco was produced from 1987 to 1991, featuring streamlined aerodynamic styling, a modernized interior, and electronic fuel injection across all engines.
Launched for the 1987 model year, the fourth-generation Ford Bronco moved onto the updated eighth-generation F-150 platform. The exterior was thoroughly redesigned with a streamlined front end, flush composite headlamps, wrap-around bumper caps, and rounded wheel arches to minimize aerodynamic drag. Inside, the cabin received a complete overhaul featuring an all-new dashboard layout, updated bucket seats, improved HVAC controls, and elevated interior materials. The vehicle continued as a three-door full-size SUV with a removable fiberglass rear section.
Engine choices were fully modernized with electronic multi-port fuel injection across the entire lineup, consisting of a 4.9-liter inline-six (145 hp), a 4.9-liter V8 (185 hp), and a high-output 5.8-liter V8 (210 hp). Gearbox choices expanded to include a 5-speed Mazda M5OD manual and the electronic E4OD 4-speed automatic transmission introduced in 1990. Safety was upgraded with standard rear-wheel anti-lock brakes (ABS), making Bronco a pioneer in light-truck safety technology. Trim levels included Custom, XL, XLT, Eddie Bauer, and a commemorative 1991 Silver Anniversary Edition.
