The third-generation Ford Bronco was introduced for the 1980 model year, sharing its redesigned frame and body panels with the seventh-generation Ford F-150 pickup. Engineered during a period of rising fuel prices, the vehicle incorporated lighter high-strength materials. A major technical advancement was the adoption of the Twin-Traction Beam (TTB) independent front suspension system featuring coil springs and split axle housings, replacing the traditional solid front axle to dramatically improve highway handling stability and ride comfort. The body retained its iconic three-door full-size SUV layout with a removable rear fiberglass section.
Engine choices included a returning base 4.9-liter (300 cu in) inline-six gasoline engine, along with 4.9-liter (302 cu in) and 5.8-liter (351 Windsor) V8 engines. For 1985, electronic multi-port fuel injection (EFI) was added to the 4.9-liter V8, raising output to 190 horsepower. Gearbox options ranged from 3-speed and 4-speed manual transmissions to 3-speed C6 and 4-speed AOD automatic transmissions with overdrive. This generation also marked the 1985 debut of the iconic Eddie Bauer trim edition, featuring signature outdoor-themed two-tone paint schemes, plush cloth interior, and custom luggage accessories.
